 Culture Project: Gender Roles

Compare & Contrast

For my blog post I have studied the gender roles in Canelos, Hadza and Darfur. In Canelos I learned that Canelos is a rural parish of the canton of Pastaza, in the territory of Pastaza. It is located to the southeast of the city of Puyo. In the 1860s, Canelos was a canton itself, comprising the villages of Canelos, Sarayaku, Lliquino, Andoas and the Sapara and Jíbara tribes. In 1897, the "Oriental Region" was created, bringing Canelos into the province of Tungurahua. Eventually, the canton became a parish within the canton of Pastaza, now in the province of Pastaza. In Hadza I learned that women are very big on care giving to the children. Children live in a hut with their caregiver which can either be their mom or it can be their grandmother. The women's job is to take care of the children until they reach puberty. When they reach puberty they move out into their own hut and live with kids the same age, but they still live near the caregiver. If there is no caregiver to be presents you will notice a dramatic difference. The men do all the work and always will hunt with a poison arrow. Then finally in Darfur I learned that the gender roles are in a way are equal but at the same time they are not. For example, the male will poke holes into the soil with his stick and then trailing behind the women will be dropping seeds into the holes. But the men spun the cotton and chatted in the public places while women stayed home. Women have to cook, do chores for their family, and they brew beer for seasonal labor exchange parties. While the women did that, men also had task to do on the side such as hunting, building homes, felling trees and organizing annual rituals. These cultures all relate together because the women all are the caregivers for the most part and if not they do the "light work" such as planting seeds and ect.

Overall comparing these to my culture is very different in my opinion. In the past usually gender roles have traditionally been linked to biological distinctions between men and women. Although evidence suggests that biology plays a role in gendered behavior, the extent to which it influences gender roles is unknown. Evolution, according to one theory, is to blame for inequalities in gender roles. Today I feel women are empowered more and have made a voice about having equal rights. In the cultures I studied all the women were viewed to do the easy chores, but I know we can do anything that men can do.
