POST1 Gender Roles

Gender Roles

For my project I chose gender roles because I think its very interesting how in different areas or countries the gender roles can be way different. I would hope most of the places would be equal but it doesn't seem to be that way.

Darfur:

- In the region Sudan, Darfur, the gender roles are in a way are equal but at the same time they are not. For example, the male will poke holes into the soil with his stick and then trailing behind the women will be dropping seeds into the holes. But the men spun the cotton and chatted in the public places while women stayed home. Women have to cook, do chores for their family, and they brew beer for seasonal labor exchange parties. While the women did that, men also had task to do on the side such as hunting, building homes, felling trees and organizing annual rituals.

Canelos:

- In the region Ecuador Canelos, the gender roles are not that fair. The women do almost all the gardening besides tobacco, plantains, bananas, and maize. They also take care of the children, cook, clean and make everyone clothes. The men mostly hunt, get rid of large trees and vines, tend to the crops women can't tend to, and find jobs they can attend to make money. The few times that men and women work together are when the wives travel to Paris to trade goods. In eHRAF they say "Cosmologically speaking, men are predators, women are domesticators."

Hadza

- In the region Northern Tanzania in a town called Hadza women are very big on care giving to the children. Children live in a hut with their caregiver which can either be their mom or it can be their grandmother. The women's job is to take care of the children until they reach puberty. When they reach puberty they move out into their own hut and live with kids the same age, but they still live near the caregiver. If there is no care giver to be presents you will notice a dramatic difference. The men do all the work and always will hunt with a poison arrow.
